Introduction

Two Magento 2 stores, a long list of things that were not working, and a client who needed them fixed properly

EquiMercado Comercio Justo is a Spanish fair trade organisation operating under the umbrella of Fundación Adsis — distributing certified organic food and natural cosmetics sourced from fair trade producers across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Their catalogue spans coffee, chocolate, teas, spices, honey, natural cosmetics, and zero-waste products.

EquiMercado operates two distinct Magento 2 storefronts: a B2C store for end consumers (equimercado.org) and a wholesale B2B store for retailers and businesses (newb2b.equimercado.org). Both stores serve customers across mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands — each with different shipping thresholds, payment methods, and regulatory requirements.

The work touched both stores at the same time — B2C and B2B. Shipping logic, email templates, checkout labels, category names, contact forms, GDPR checkboxes. Each sprint was scoped out, approved by the client, and then built. No surprises on hours or scope.

The Challenge

What we found when we looked at both stores

Both stores had been running for a while and things had started slipping. Shipping rules were wrong for the Balearic Islands. Order confirmation emails were showing cheque payment instructions to bank transfer customers. The B2B store had no working account creation page. Checkout buttons were in English. GDPR checkboxes were missing on every form. The shipping logic — three zones per store, driven by postal code prefix. Magento's built-in shipping rules cannot do postcode-prefix matching for free shipping thresholds. Spain needs it — Navarra (31***), Balearics (07***), and the rest of the peninsula all have different minimums, and those are different again for B2B. Standard configuration does not cover that. We built a custom module that reads the postal code, matches it to the right zone, and shows the correct threshold in the cart with a progress bar. Works on both stores with their separate thresholds.

Shipping free-threshold not applying correctly by postal code zone

The B2C store was not detecting the correct free-shipping threshold for Balearic Islands orders. Spain's shipping zones required three distinct rules: Peninsula (free from €40), Balearic Islands (free from €60), and Navarra/31*** postcodes (free from €9). B2B had its own separate thresholds (€150 / €300 / €100). None of these were correctly implemented or displayed in the cart.

Order confirmation emails unlocalized and showing incorrect payment content

Both stores' order confirmation emails had multiple issues: wrong subject lines, English/incorrect Spanish text, bank transfer content still showing cheque payment instructions ("Hacer cheque pagadero"), incorrect store name branding, wrong footer, and an untranslated "Call us" label. The reset password email subject was also in the wrong language.

Category names and menu order not updating on storefront

"Especias y sales" needed to show as "Especias" and "Quinoa" needed to show as "Cocina" — but category name changes in the Magento admin tree were not reflecting on the storefront. Category display issues also existed in "Dentífricos" and "Pastillas de Jabón" where left navigation was not visible.

B2B store missing key functionality — account creation, home page, payment labels

The B2B store had no customer account creation flow. The home page was missing news items, bestsellers (only 1 product showed instead of 6), and functional CTA links. Payment method labels were wrong: "Place Order" instead of "Hacer Pedido", and the "Según Opciones Acordadas" method had incorrect mandatory checkbox text referencing Canary Islands instead of the correct commercial conditions.

Missing contact forms, broken homepage links, and GDPR subscription compliance

Both stores were missing functional contact forms on key CTA buttons. Homepage links in B2C (Fundación Adsis, Canary Islands, "Tengo una tienda") were broken or missing. Subscription and contact forms lacked GDPR-required consent checkboxes. The create account form also needed a compliance checkbox.

"Customers from Palma were getting free shipping at €40 when the Balearics threshold is €60. It had been like that for a while. The fix worked and we did not need to touch it again."

SUMMARY

Where things are now

EquiMercado sells fair trade products. Their stores were not up to that standard — wrong shipping thresholds, emails with wrong payment instructions, a B2B store where you could not create an account, checkout buttons in English, and no GDPR checkboxes anywhere.

Five sprints across May 2024. Each one scoped and approved before we started. Shipping thresholds are now correct for every zone. Emails are in Spanish with the right content. The B2B store has account creation and a working checkout. All forms have consent checkboxes. Nothing went down during any deployment.

Both stores work properly now. Balearic customers get the right threshold. B2B wholesalers can create accounts and see correct labels. Forms are legally compliant. The emails look like they came from a real company.

"We had a long list across both stores. Some things had been broken for months. What worked was the structure — we knew what was in each sprint, approved the hours, and it came back done. No scope creep, no unexpected bills."
